The Hy-Vee Story
In 1930, Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small general store in Beaconsfield, Iowa. That store grew to become Hy-Vee – a company known for excellent service and low prices. As an employee-owned company, Hy-Vee encourages each of our more than 51,000 employees to help guide the company.
Our outstanding success demonstrates their hard work and clear vision. Through their efforts, the name Hy-Vee has become synonymous with quality products, low prices and superior customer service. Our slogan, "A Helpful Smile In Every Aisle," expresses the foundation of our corporate philosophy.
Our corporate office is located in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Hy-Vee campus includes a 30,000-square-foot conference center for meetings, training and continuing education programs. The Hy-Vee History Center opened in 1999.
Our distribution operations are based in Chariton, Iowa, where we have more than 1.1 million square feet of state-of-the-art warehouse space. Another large distribution center, with 435,000 square feet, is located in Cherokee, Iowa.
With sales of more than $5.6 billion and more than 200 retail stores across seven Midwestern states, Hy-Vee ranks among the top 30 supermarket chains in the nation.

To support our retail operations, Hy-Vee has established a distribution system that secures the highest quality merchandise and transports it quickly and efficiently to our customers. In addition, Hy-Vee has acquired or developed several companies to help us fulfill our mission of being the most economical supplier of goods and services for our stores: D & D Foods, Inc.

With our unique employee-owned approach to achieving success, Hy-Vee continues to draw the attention of the industry. In a recent survey, readers ranked Hy-Vee among the top five supermarket chains in the nation as characterized by terms of service, price and customer satisfaction. The Better Business Bureau of Greater Iowa awarded Hy-Vee the Integrity Award. The company was also a finalist for the national Torch Award for Marketplace Integrity, sponsored by the Council of Better Business Bureaus. A Midwest business publication recognized Hy-Vee as the "Best Place to Work" and the "Company With the Most Promising Future." Our former CEO, Ron Pearson, was also honored as "Best CEO" that year.
