Hy-Vee Celebrates 1 Million Mile Safe Driver

CHARITON, Iowa (Aug. 19, 2020) — Hy-Vee, Inc. announces that Mike Gillman, a driver from the Chariton Distribution Center, has become Chariton’s 89th driver to reach the 1 million mile mark for consecutive miles driven without a preventable accident.
Gillman reached the milestone on Thursday, August 6, just east of Osceola, Iowa, on his return home from delivering produce to the Grand Island and Columbus Hy-Vee stores in Nebraska. When he returned to the Chariton Distribution Center, Gillman was met by fellow employees, where his accomplishment was celebrated.
Gillman has been a Hy-Vee employee since April 1981, when he began working as a part-time employee at the Chariton Hy-Vee. In August 1983, he moved to regular-time status and eventually full-time in December 1984, when he became an assistant shift manager. Since then, Gillman has held various roles throughout the company, becoming a truck driver for the Chariton warehouse in August 1996.
Gillman has been a member of the Hy-Vee Road of Gold Hall of Fame since March 2005, when he became Chariton’s 33rd driver to reach 1 million miles driven without a preventable accident. The Hy-Vee Road of Gold program honors drivers who have achieved safe miles driven milestones with an annual banquet, a variety of gifts and a personalized gold- (1 million mile safe driver) or black- (2 million mile safe driver) painted Hy-Vee tractor to drive for five years.
