WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (April 23, 2020) — Hy-Vee, Inc. announced today that Harold Major, a driver from the Chariton Distribution Center, was the first driver in Hy-Vee history to reach the 3 million mile mark for miles driven without a preventable accident.

Major reached the milestone on Thursday afternoon, as he left the Chariton distribution center with 137 miles to go until the 3-million mark on his route to the Iowa City area. He was met by a group of Iowa City Hy-Vee store directors and employees, along with his wife Cindy, at the North Dodge Hy-Vee in Iowa City, where his accomplishment was celebrated by his fellow Hy-Vee employees.

Major has been a Hy-Vee employee since October 1989, when he began working in the Chariton grocery warehouse. In August 1993, he became a truck driver for the Chariton distribution center and has been driving for Hy-Vee ever since.

Major has been a member of the Hy-Vee Road of Gold Hall of Fame since May 2004, when he became Hy-Vee’s 28th driver to reach 1 million miles driven without a preventable accident. The Hy-Vee Road of Gold program honors drivers who have achieved safe miles driven milestones with an annual banquet, a variety of gifts, and a personalized gold-painted Hy-Vee tractor to drive for five years.
