    Originally sold as a premixed cocktail in the ’70s and ’80s, the rum, vodka and orange juice drink known as the Brass Monkey inspired the now-famous Beastie Boy’s song of the same name. This update adds a mellow ale.

    ½ c. Hy-Vee canned mandarin oranges in light syrup
    2 oz. Tito’s handmade vodka
    1 oz. Bacardi white rum
    2 tsp. coconut flavor extract
    6 oz. Belgian white wheat ale
    2 Hy-Vee maraschino cherries with stems, for garnish

    Directions

    1. Drain canned mandarin oranges; reserve ¼ cup light syrup. Set aside 4 orange sections for garnish.

    2. Muddle remaining mandarin oranges and reserved syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add vodka, rum and coconut extract. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Cover and shake well until chilled.

    3. Strain into 2 (12-oz.) ice-filled rocks glasses. Top with ale. Garnish with reserved orange sections and cherries threaded onto cocktail picks, if desired.
