2 c. sugar, divided
2 ½ c. hot water
¼ tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tbsp. butter
½ c. milk
½ c. chopped nuts
whipped cream or ice cream

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a heavy skillet, melt 3/4 cup sugar, stirring constantly until amber colored. Turn off heat. Stir until thickened and slightly cooled.
  3. Slowly stir in water. Stir in 3/4 cup sugar, salt and vanilla. Pour into an 8-inch-square baking dish.
  4. Whisk together flour, 1/2 cup sugar and baking powder. Cut in butter until incorporated. Stir in milk and chopped nuts until just combined. Drop into syrup mixture.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
