Dietitian-Approved Top 5 Frozen Food Hacks

Hy-Vee Frozen

Frozen foods can make heathy eating extremely convenient by saving time and preventing food waste. Keeping frozen vegetables on hand is great, but there many different ways we can use the freezer and frozen foods to help us with meal prep and adding variety to our plate. Try out these top five dietitian-approved food hacks!

  1. Bulk Prep Ground Beef or Ground Turkey
If you happen to score some ground beef or ground turkey on sale or just want to be able to cook dinner just a little bit quicker, try browning the meat and freezing ahead of time. Brown multiple pounds of ground meat at one time. Portion each pound into bags and freeze. When you're ready to use for spaghetti or taco night, pull a bag out of the freezer and finish cooking!
  2. Steamfresh Grains and Vegetables
Look for Birds Eye Steamfresh bags packed with both grains and veggies, like Brown and Wild Rice with Broccoli and Carrots or Roasted Red Potatoes and Green Beans with Parmesan Olive Oil Sauce. Steam in the microwave and pair with your favorite protein for a quick and easy meal.
  3. Time Saver Smoothies
You don't even need to add ice with this hack! Portion fruit and greens (like spinach) into a bag and freeze. When ready to make a smoothie, add to a blender with your preferred liquid and smoothie boosters like chia seed or protein powder – and breakfast is served. 4. Ice Cold Brew
Who said ice cube trays were just for ice? Pour some extra coffee into an ice cube tray and freeze. Next time you make a batch of cold brew, you can keep it nice and cool without risking the ice melting and diluting your morning jolt!
  5. Veggie Spirals
Sneak in an extra serving of vegetables with Veggies Made Great! The company is committed to helping you and your family find new and delicious ways to eat more veggies. Grab a box of Veggies Made Great Blueberry Oat Muffins or their Spinach Egg White Frittatas and try them for breakfast this week to add extra protein and veggies to your morning routine!

Reduce Food Waste

Leftovers are a great way to use foods in your fridge that otherwise would go to waste. Try to plan one meal per week that involves leftovers.
