(Guaifenesin 400mg/Dextromethorphan HBr 20mg)—EXPECTORANT/COUGH SUPPRESSANT
Hack! Hack! Cough! Cough! Cold season is upon us. Need something for that annoying cough? Ask your Hy-Vee pharmacist if Tussin DM tablets would be appropriate for you.
How does it work?
Tussin DM is a combination product. It has 400 mg of Guaifenesin and 20 mg of Dextromethorphan per tablet. The Guaifenesin helps to facilitate the removal of mucous. Dextromethorphan works by decreasing the sensitivity of cough receptors and thus interfering with the cough reflex. This product has an immediate release, so you will notice relief quickly.
The two products work together to:
- Loosen and relieve chest congestion
- Control cough
Directions for use:
- Take 1 tablet every 4 hours as needed for cough, maximum of 6 tablets in 24 hours.
- Take with a full glass of water.
- Can be taken with or without food.
Cautions:
Do not take if you are taking or have taken a Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the last two weeks. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure. MAOI medications are commonly used to treat emotional conditions and Parkinson’s disease. Do not exceed recommended dosing on package. It is also advised that you should see your doctor if you experience a cough for longer than 7 days or a cough that is accompanied by a fever, rash or persistent headache. Avoid use for persistent or chronic cough unless recommended by your health care provider.
