Hy-Vee Partners with Johnson County, Kansas, to Administer Its First COVID-19 Vaccines in the State

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Feb. 15, 2021) — This week, Hy-Vee, Inc. is partnering with the Johnson County Health Department in Kansas to administer its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to residents of senior housing and independent living facilities using mobile vaccine clinics. The vaccination clinics begin today and will continue throughout the week.
Altogether, approximately 1,700 residents from 23 senior housing and independent living facilities will be vaccinated by the end of the week with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Hy-Vee pharmacists will return to each of the facilities within approximately 21 days after the first dose to administer the second dose. The list of facilities can be found below.
“Hy-Vee’s eight-state footprint and bandwidth of more than 270 pharmacies gives us the unique opportunity to offer much-needed vaccine accessibility to both urban and rural communities across the Midwest,” said Aaron Wiese, Hy-Vee’s executive vice president of business innovation and chief health officer. “Our team of more than 2,700 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are committed to following all CDC guidelines, and we have processes in place to ensure the administration of the vaccines are done so in a safe and efficient manner.”
Hy-Vee is part of a select group of retailers that was selected earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to be a national COVID-19 vaccine provider. Recently, Hy-Vee began vaccinating to residents in Iowa and South Dakota through the federal partnership, receiving vaccine supply directly from the CDC. Hy-Vee is also working locally with state and county governments to provide vaccinations in select areas of Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska. The vaccine is free to all patients.
Hy-Vee pharmacy members are required to wear masks and other personal protective equipment when administering vaccines. All patients must also wear masks during the vaccination process and are encouraged to practice social distancing when at the pharmacy locations. In addition, Hy-Vee offers free COVID-19 lab testing (molecular PCR) at nearly 200 pharmacy locations, rapid antigen COVID-19 testing available for a minimal cost at more than 60 pharmacy locations and rapid antibody testing to test for past COVID-19 infection, available for a minimal cost at more than 250 pharmacy locations.
