August 10, 2022 | News & Press Releases
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 10, 2022) — Hy-Vee, Inc. announces that it will host COVID-19, pneumonia and shingles vaccination clinics during the first six days of the Iowa State Fair.
The vaccination clinics will be held daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11 through Tuesday, Aug. 16. There is no appointment necessary to receive a vaccine. Hy-Vee Pharmacy team members will be at Booth #10040 just west of the North Gate and across the E. 31st Street corridor from the Thrill Zone, to offer the vaccinations. Vaccinations will be given inside Hy-Vee Healthy You mobile clinic units. COVID-19 vaccine recipients must stay in the observation area for 15 minutes after they receive their vaccine. Each vaccine recipient must wear a mask during their vaccination.
Additionally, over-the-counter, at-home COVID-19 tests will be available. Under the Biden Administration’s ruling, each individual covered under private insurance or Medicare Part B can currently receive up to eight (8) free at-home COVID-19 tests each month.
COVID-19 Vaccines & Boosters
Individuals will have the option to receive a free Pfizer-BioNTech (ages 12 and older) or Moderna (ages 18 and older) vaccine or booster.
Pfizer-BioNTech
The Pfizer-BioNTech primary series requires two doses that should be administered within 3 to 8 weeks apart. For individuals ages 12 and older, a booster dose can be administered at least 5 months after the second dose. For individuals ages 50 and older, a second booster can be administered at least 4 months after the first booster.
Moderna
The Moderna primary series requires two doses that should be administered within 4 to 8 weeks apart. For individuals ages 18 and older, a booster dose can be administered at least 5 months after the second dose. For individuals ages 50 and older, a second booster can be administered at least 4 months after the first booster.
Minors must have parental/guardian consent to receive the vaccine. Individuals who receive their first dose at the Iowa State Fair can receive their second dose at any Hy-Vee Pharmacy location.
It is recommended (but not required) that vaccine recipients bring the following to their vaccination: insurance card (if they have insurance) and Medicare Part B red, white and blue card (if Medicare recipient); COVID-19 vaccination record (if applicable); and photo ID. If individuals do not have insurance, they can still be vaccinated.

Pneumonia Vaccine
Pneumonia is caused by bacteria, which can lead to serious infection in the lungs, blood, and brain. The disease is hard to treat because the bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics. Individuals are at greater risk if they are 65 or older, very young, have heart or lung disease, or their immune system is weakened. Vaccination is the best way to prevent pneumococcal infection.
The Prevnar vaccine will also be available by Hy-Vee at the Iowa State Fair. Adults 65 years and older should discuss receiving Prevnar with their healthcare provider. If individuals have already received a dose of Prevnar before age 65 years, another dose of Prevnar is not recommended. Individuals might need either Pneumovax or Prevnar or both before age 65 years if they are a smoker or if they have a long-term health condition such as diabetes, asthma or heart, lung, or kidney disease. Individuals should talk to their healthcare provider to find out if they need one or both of these vaccines.
There is no prescription necessary, and it’s covered by most insurance plans. If you do not have insurance, please check with the pharmacy team members onsite.

Shingles Vaccine
Shingles is a painful disease caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles usually includes a painful rash with blisters that can occur anywhere on an individual’s body, even the face and eyes. Although some medicines can help treat shingles, there is no cure. Individuals are more likely to develop shingles as they get older. The best way to prevent shingles and its serious complications is to get vaccinated. Individuals should get the shingles vaccine if they are age 50 years or older, even if they’ve already had shingles. It is possible to get the disease more than once.
The Shingrix vaccine will be also available by Hy-Vee at the Iowa State Fair. The Shingrix vaccine is more than 90% effective for individuals ages 50 and older. Even if patients have received the Zostavax shingles vaccine, Shingrix can dramatically reduce their risk of getting shingles. Shingrix is a two-dose vaccine. Individuals who receive their first dose at the Iowa State Fair can receive their second dose at any Hy-Vee Pharmacy location.
There is no prescription necessary, and it’s covered by most insurance plans. If you do not have insurance, please check with the pharmacy team members onsite.
