Hy-Vee to Host Vaccination Clinic Before Hawkeyes Football Season Opener Against Indiana on Saturday

September 2, 2021 | News & Press Releases

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Sept. 2, 2021) — Hy-Vee, Inc. announces today that in partnership with the University of Iowa, it will host a COVID-19 and flu vaccination clinic before the Hawkeyes season opener at Kinnick Stadium Saturday against the Indiana University Hoosiers.

The walk-up vaccination clinic will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 4. There is no appointment necessary to receive either vaccine. Hy-Vee Pharmacy team members will be at the Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobile near the West Campus Transportation Center building (northwest corner of Kinnick Stadium across from Gate H). Each COVID-19 vaccine recipient must stay in the observation area for 15 minutes after they receive their vaccine.

Individuals will have the option to receive Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine, Moderna vaccine or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are available to individuals 12 years of age and older. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires two doses that should be administered at least 21 days apart. Moderna vaccines are available to individuals 18 years of age and older. The Moderna vaccine also requires two doses that should be administered at least 28 days apart. Janssen vaccines are available to individuals 18 years of age and older, and require a single-dose injection. Minors must have parental/guardian consent to receive the vaccine. Individuals who receive their first dose at the Hy-Vee clinic can receive their second dose at any Hy-Vee Pharmacy location.

COVID-19 vaccines will also be available for moderately to severely immunosuppressed individuals who are eligible for a third dose of either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

According to the CDC, the third Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna doses should only be administered to immunocompromised individuals at least 28 days after their second dose. It is strongly recommended that individuals receive the same vaccine manufacturer as their previous dose(s). At this time, there is not an additional vaccine dose authorized for Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine recipients.

The CDC identifies the following individuals as being moderately to severely immunosuppressed:
•    Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
•    Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
•    Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
•    Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
•    Advanced or untreated HIV infection
•    Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

According to the CDC, individuals will need to self-attest that they are severely to moderately immunocompromised but do not need to show proof of their condition. Hy-Vee recommends all pharmacy patients bring their COVID-19 vaccination record card with them to their appointment, which shows when they received their last COVID-19 vaccine dose and the vaccine manufacturer.

It is recommended (but not required) that vaccine recipients bring the following to their vaccination: insurance card (if they have insurance) and Medicare Part B red, white and blue card (if Medicare recipient); and photo ID. Masks are required. If individuals do not have insurance, they can still be vaccinated.

Individuals who complete their COVID-19 vaccination with Hy-Vee between June 1 and Nov. 1, 2021, can receive a $10 Hy-Vee gift card. Each patient who receives a flu vaccine with Hy-Vee Pharmacy can earn a 20-cent Hy-Vee Fuel Saver reward, which can be redeemed at any Hy-Vee Gas, Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh Express, or Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh location. See Hy-Vee.com for details. Restrictions apply.
