WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (July 20, 2018) — In response to major tornado damage across several Iowa communities yesterday, Hy-Vee, Inc. began donating meals, snacks and beverages to impacted residents and emergency workers today and will continue its outreach throughout the duration of cleanup efforts.

outreach includes sending five Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles to Marshalltown and Pella to provide mobile meals, snacks and beverages as well as a respite area; providing all meals to the American Red Cross’ shelter at the Marshalltown YMCA; providing more than 150 meals to impacted families in Bondurant; and establishing the Marshalltown Hy-Vee parking lot as a distribution area for people to pick up free snacks, beverages and cleaning supplies.

“Our hearts go out to our employees and all of the families impacted by this natural disaster, as well as the first responders who are taking care of their communities,” said Randy Edeker, chairman of the board, CEO and president of Hy-Vee. “We’re thankful that no lives were lost. As these communities begin their cleanup efforts, we want to do all that we can to help them recover.”

Marshalltown, Bondurant and Pella began cleanup efforts on Friday as weather experts and state leaders toured the damage following tornado touchdowns.

In addition to meals, Hy-Vee plans to distribute more than 111,000 bottles of water, 31,000 bottles of Gatorade, more than 1,600 cases of dried meat snack products and more than 70,000 snack and protein bars from its Marshalltown Hy-Vee parking lot as well as its Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles, which will be traveling to various sites around Pella and Marshalltown over the next several days.

“We’ll continue working with emergency management teams, local officials and the American Red Cross to identify what needs Hy-Vee may be able to assist with,” said Edeker. “We hope by providing meals, beverages and assistance that we can provide some comfort as the damage is assessed and communities begin their cleanup efforts.”
