    1 c. butter, softened
    ½ c. sugar
    2 large eggs, separated
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 c. flour
    ½ tsp. salt
    finely chopped walnuts
    colored frosting

    Directions

    1. Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Combine flour and salt, and add to creamed mixture.
    2. Form dough into walnut-sized balls. Dip in slightly beaten egg whites. Roll in chopped walnuts. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheet.
    3. Bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes.
    4. Remove from oven. Press thumb in center of each cookie.
    5. Return cookie sheet to oven and bake 8 more minutes.
    6. Remove cookies to wire rack to cool.
    7. When cool, fill indentation in each cookie with colored frosting.
