Rinds, seeds, crusts, and peels. Turn these common throwaways into delicious snacks and meals! Including a recipe for candied orange rinds that our Test Kitchen cannot recommend enough!

  1. Hy-Vee Bakery Bread

What do you use your bread for? Sandwiches? Toasts? What about margherita toasts and delicious apricot-almond bread pudding? We love using stale bread to make crispy toasts or to soak up the milk and egg mixture in a bread pudding. YUM.

Margherita Toasts: Top Hy-Vee Bakery Pane Toscano bread slices with mozzarella cheese and tomatoes. Broil until cheese melts. Drizzle with Gustare Vita balsamic glaze; add fresh basil.

  2. Fresh Oranges

Mmm. There's nothing more refreshing than snacking on an orange. But what about those rinds? You can use them too! And if you're anything like our Test Kitchen, they'll become your new favorite sweet treat too. And, if you're just a fan of the oranges, try adding them to a honey-orange parfait!

Honey-Orange Parfaits: Layer Hy-Vee vanilla nonfat Greek yogurt with orange sections and Hy-Vee granola.

  5. Hy-Vee Rotisserie Chicken

Chicken that we roasted for you? That's our favorite kind of chicken. Of course, we're talking about rotisserie chicken. Use it to make your favorite recipe, like Chicken Cobb Salad, and then use the bones to make a homemade chicken stock.

  6. Fresh Broccoli

We all eat the florets of the broccoli, but let's give the stocks a chance! Use the florets to make a Bacon Broccoli side salad and then use the stocks to make a crunchy slaw.

  7. Whole Roasted Ham

Leftover roasted ham on your hands? Lucky you! We love using it to make homemade sandwiches made with fresh mozzarella and basil. And you can use your ham bone to make a flavorful soup, too!

Ham, Mozzarella, and Basil Sandwich: Spread 2 teaspoons Hy-Vee Dijon mustard on a slice of Hy-Vee Bakery Italian bread. Layer 1 oz. mozzarella cheese, 3 oz. smoked fully cooked ham, 2 roasted red bell pepper slices, and fresh basil leaves on top. Top with a second bread slice. Serves 1.
